Over the break, I did some research and also spoke to my father who’s a GP, about GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide), which have become widely discussed in recent years and last year we had many new members start training who were on these medications, particularly for their role in blood sugar control and weight loss. Alongside Ozempic are similar medications, including Wegovy (the same drug at a higher dose, approved for weight loss), Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), Saxenda (liraglutide), and the oral option Rybelsus (semaglutide).
These medications belong to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists (with tirzepatide also acting on GIP receptors). They mimic natural hormones released in the gut that help regulate blood sugar, slow digestion, and reduce appetite.
What GLP-1 Medications Do Well
GLP-1 medications can be highly effective at:
- Improving blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes
- Reducing appetite and food cravings
- Supporting gradual weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes
- Improving insulin sensitivity
For many people, these medications provide a helpful tool to regain control over eating behaviours and metabolic health.
What They Don’t Do on Their Own
While effective, GLP-1 medications are not a replacement for exercise, especially strength training. On their own, they do not:
- Build or preserve muscle mass
- Improve strength, balance, or bone density
- Maintain metabolic rate during weight loss
Without resistance training, weight loss from these medications can include loss of lean muscle, which may slow metabolism and increase the risk of weight regain.
The Missing Piece: Strength Training
Strength training is critical for anyone using GLP-1 medications. It helps ensure that the weight lost is primarily fat, not muscle, while supporting long-term health, independence, and confidence.
