When it comes to health and fitness, the only person you should be competing against is yourself.
In a world where we’re constantly comparing ourselves to others (thanks to social media!), it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters.
We see people running marathons, lifting impressive weights, completing obstacle races and achieving incredible physical transformations.
And while these achievements are worth celebrating, they can sometimes leave us questioning our own abilities.
Am I fit enough? Am I too old? Should I be doing more?
But here’s something we’ve learnt over 20 years of coaching people at Live Well Health & Fitness Studio.
Everyone runs their own race.
And the beauty of fitness is that no two races need to look the same.
Fitness Means Something Different to Everyone
Recently, my family and I participated in a Spartan obstacle race in Wollongong.
What struck me wasn’t just the physical challenge, but the incredible variety of people participating.
Some were elite athletes pushing themselves to their absolute limits.
Others were first-timers simply hoping to cross the finish line.
There were parents, children, experienced competitors and everyday people looking to challenge themselves.
Everyone had a different reason for being there.
Yet despite their different fitness levels and abilities, they all shared something in common.
They showed up. They challenged themselves. And they supported one another.
It reminded me that fitness isn’t necessarily about being the best.
It’s about becoming a better version of yourself.
Your Fitness Goals Should Reflect Your Life
At Live Well, our average member is in their mid-50s.
Some members want to lose weight. Others want to improve their strength, increase muscle mass or maintain healthy bones.
But when you dig a little deeper, their real motivations are often much more meaningful.
They want to:
- Get down on the floor and play with their grandchildren, and get back up without struggling.
- Travel overseas and confidently walk for hours exploring new cities.
- Continue playing golf, tennis or their favourite sport.
- Carry their own shopping and luggage without assistance.
- Maintain their independence well into their 70s, 80s and beyond.
- Feel strong, capable and confident in their own bodies.
For someone in their 40s, success might mean completing their first 10km run.
For someone in their 60s, it might mean returning to a sport they haven’t played in decades.
For someone in their 80s, it could be climbing a flight of stairs without holding the handrail.
Different goals. Different challenges. Equally important achievements.
That’s what makes health and fitness so personal.
Stop Comparing Your Chapter 1 to Someone Else’s Chapter 20
One of the biggest barriers to starting a fitness journey is comparison.
People often assume they need to get fit before joining a gym or working with a personal trainer.
They worry about being the weakest person in the room, not knowing how to perform an exercise or being unable to keep up.
But here’s the reality.
You don’t need to be fit to start training. You train to become fit.
Everyone starts somewhere.
The person confidently lifting weights today may have struggled with a basic bodyweight squat a few years ago.
The person running 10km might have started by walking around the block.
And the person who looks strong and confident in their 70s may have only started strength training in their 60s.
Progress isn’t always linear, and it certainly isn’t identical for everyone.
The key is to focus on your own journey.
Ask yourself:
Am I stronger than I was six months ago?
Can I move more confidently?
Do I have more energy?
Am I capable of doing things I previously avoided?
Those are the measures of success that really matter.
Why Strength Training Becomes More Important as We Age
As we get older, maintaining our physical capabilities becomes increasingly important.
Without regular resistance training, we naturally lose muscle mass and strength as we age, a process known as sarcopenia.
This can affect everything from our balance and mobility to our ability to perform everyday activities.
The good news?
Research consistently shows that strength training can improve muscle strength and physical function in older adults, including people who begin exercising later in life.
And you don’t need to spend hours in the gym to experience the benefits.
A well-structured strength training program, performed consistently and progressively, can make a meaningful difference.
At Live Well, we focus on three principles:
LIFT. SPRINT. PLAY.
LIFT: Build and maintain the muscle strength needed to support your body, bones and everyday activities.
SPRINT: Challenge your cardiovascular fitness and maintain your ability to move with speed and purpose, at a level appropriate for you.
PLAY: Use the fitness you’ve developed to enjoy life, whether that’s hiking, travelling, playing sport or keeping up with the grandchildren.
Because what’s the point of building fitness if we don’t use it to enjoy life?
The Power of Community and Encouragement
One of the most inspiring things about events like Spartan is the encouragement between participants.
People cheer for complete strangers.
They celebrate others overcoming obstacles.
They recognise effort, not just finishing times.
Imagine if we approached everyday fitness with that same mindset.
Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we celebrated their progress.
Instead of feeling intimidated by someone stronger or fitter, we became inspired by their commitment.
Instead of focusing on what we couldn’t do, we recognised how far we’ve come.
This is the environment we work hard to create across our Live Well studios in Kogarah, Bondi Junction and Caringbah.
A welcoming community where people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds can train together, support one another and celebrate their achievements.
Because when people feel supported, they’re more likely to stay consistent.
And consistency is where the real results happen.
Don’t Just Train for Today. Train for the Next 20 or 30 Years.
Here’s a question worth considering.
What do you want to be physically capable of doing in 10, 20 or even 30 years?
Do you want to hike through the mountains?
Travel the world?
Play sport with your children or grandchildren?
Enjoy an active retirement?
Or simply maintain the freedom to do everyday things without relying on others?
Whatever your answer, the physical foundations for that future are being built today.
The strength you develop now, the fitness you maintain and the habits you establish can all influence your quality of life in the decades ahead.
That’s why we encourage our members to think beyond short-term goals like losing a few kilograms or improving a fitness test.
Those goals certainly have their place.
But the bigger picture is about building a body that allows you to keep living the life you want.
Your Next Challenge Is Waiting
You don’t need to sign up for a Spartan race or climb a mountain to challenge yourself.
Your next challenge could be something much simpler.
It might be committing to two strength training sessions per week.
Walking five kilometres without stopping.
Learning to perform your first proper squat.
Returning to a sport you once loved.
Or booking that hiking holiday you’ve been talking about for years.
The challenge itself isn’t what matters most.
It’s having something to work towards.
Something that motivates you to keep moving, improving and discovering what you’re capable of.
Because age shouldn’t be the reason you stop challenging yourself.
It should be another reason to keep going.
Everyone Runs Their Own Race. What’s Yours?
At Live Well Health & Fitness Studio, we believe that getting older shouldn’t mean giving up the activities you love.
Whether you’re 40, 50, 60, 70 or beyond, there’s always an opportunity to improve your strength, fitness and confidence.
You don’t need to be the fastest.
You don’t need to lift the heaviest weights.
And you certainly don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.
You just need to keep showing up, challenging yourself and moving forward.
Because ultimately, the goal isn’t simply to add more years to your life.
It’s to add more life to your years.
