Have you ever woken up fully intending to exercise, only to have a conversation with yourself before your feet even hit the floor?
“Maybe tomorrow.”
“I’m too tired.”
“I’ve had a busy week.”
“I deserve a rest.”
If so, you’re not alone.
Recently, one of our members shared exactly this experience. As she lay in bed before her Monday morning training session, the voice in her head was trying to convince her to stay where she was.
Thankfully, she came anyway.
After her session, she felt fantastic. More energised, more positive, and ready to tackle the week ahead.
This highlights an important lesson: the voice in our head is not always looking out for our best interests.
Why Does This Voice Exist?
Our brains are designed to conserve energy and avoid discomfort. Thousands of years ago, this was a survival advantage.
Today, however, that same mechanism can work against us.
Exercise requires effort.
Learning new skills requires effort.
Making positive changes requires effort.
As a result, the brain often defaults to the easiest option in the moment, even when it isn’t the best option for our long-term health and happiness.
The voice isn’t trying to ruin your goals. It’s simply trying to keep you comfortable.
The problem is that growth rarely happens in comfort.
The Biggest Myth About Motivation
Many people believe motivated people wake up excited every day to exercise.
They don’t.
Even highly successful athletes, business owners, and fitness enthusiasts have days when they don’t feel like doing the work.
The difference is they don’t rely on motivation.
They rely on habits, routines, and accountability.
They understand that motivation is unreliable, but commitment is powerful.
Five Strategies to Beat the Voice of Self-Doubt
1. Recognise That Thoughts Are Not Commands
Just because you think something doesn’t mean you have to act on it.
You can hear:
“I don’t feel like exercising.”
And still exercise.
You can hear:
“I’m too tired.”
And still go for a walk.
Learn to separate what you think from what you do.
2. Focus on How You’ll Feel Afterwards
The voice inside your head focuses on the effort required.
Instead, focus on the reward.
Ask yourself:
“How will I feel after I finish?”
Most people never regret exercising once it’s done.
They regret skipping it.
Visualising the positive feeling afterwards can help you push through the initial resistance.
3. Create Accountability
This is one of the biggest benefits of personal training.
When someone is expecting you, you’re far more likely to show up.
Accountability removes the need to negotiate with yourself.
Whether it’s a trainer, exercise partner, group class, or friend, having someone in your corner significantly increases consistency.
4. Lower the Barrier to Starting
Often the hardest part is simply beginning.
Instead of telling yourself:
“I have to do a full workout.”
Tell yourself:
“I’ll just put my shoes on.”
Or:
“I’ll just do five minutes.”
Once you start moving, momentum usually takes over.
5. Build Identity-Based Habits
Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, focus on who you want to become.
Instead of saying:
“I want to lose weight.”
Try saying:
“I am someone who looks after their health.”
When your actions align with your identity, consistency becomes easier.
The Real Secret to Long-Term Success
The members who achieve the best results aren’t the ones who never hear the voice of self-doubt.
They’re the ones who hear it and act anyway.
They understand that every workout won’t feel amazing.
Every morning won’t be easy.
Every healthy choice won’t be convenient.
But they also know that every time they follow through, they strengthen their confidence and build momentum.
The voice inside your head will probably always be there.
The goal isn’t to silence it completely.
The goal is to stop letting it make the decisions.
Because every time you choose action over excuses, you’re building a stronger, healthier, more confident version of yourself.
